Loura Selfe Keepers, JD, MA Press Release Children with learning challenges often have difficulties in the classroom that flow over into all areas of their lives - academic, social, behavioral, and psychological. Many of these problems can be avoided if teachers and school staff understand how students learn best and provide what they need to be successful at school. After ten years of helping parents and teachers understand how to best help struggling students in the Manheim Township School District, local attorney and Nationally Certified School Psychologist, Loura Selfe Keepers, is now offering educational evaluations, behavior interventions and recommendations to the public in association with psychologist Margaret J. Kay at 2818 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, PA. Keepers notes that “with school districts cutting back on services due to budget constraints, I thought it was an ideal time to move toward providing parents with an option for evaluation and educational planning outside of the public school system.” School consultants with specialized training in academic and behavioral interventions are either having their positions cut or being assigned back to the classroom and parents may need other resources to help plan for their child’s academic success. Keepers has extensive experience making educational recommendations for students on the Autistic spectrum as well as students with attention, emotional, and learning challenges. She completed the Penn State Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) training program and performs detailed assessments and positive behavior support plans for school-age students. She has also worked as a behavior specialist privately and with IU-13. Keepers is a trained mediator and is committed to working with all parties to an educational dispute to try to reach consensus rather than reaching for the phone to call a lawyer. Prior to her training as a school psychologist, she practiced law for 10 years in Lancaster with Atlee & Hall and Mikus Law Associates. She notes, “I enjoyed the intellectual challenge of working as a lawyer, but I wanted to do something more pro-actively helpful, rather than spend my efforts arguing about responsibility after a tragedy had already occurred.” Keepers adds that she is looking forward to having the opportunity to work with students, parents and teachers throughout the area to increase school success for students who need extra support.
